Rio Ferdinand concedes England lost ‘to the best team in the tournament’ and urges social media platforms to take action against ‘rats who start spouting their disgusting feelings.’
Italy won the UEFA Euro 2020 Final against England at Wembley Stadium and some English players have been racially abused on social media.
The likes of Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford received insulting messages on social media after the game and the former Manchester United centre-back urged Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to take action against those who are free to insult, knowing they can’t face any consequence.
“Immediately after the game social media platforms became the toxic and racist safe place for the ignorant and cowardly rats to start spouting their disgusting feelings,” Ferdinand wrote on Instagram.
“Hiding behind the safety blanket that is social media platforms these disgusting people can continually abuse our England players knowing that they are safe to be able to stay anonymous. It’s a disgrace that anyone should have to receive this type of online hate….and just think about these same idiots only days ago would have been celebrating the brilliance of a Sterling or a Saka or a Walker for their efforts in an England shirt.
“You can bet ya last pound also that they would have sung the Raheem Sterling song almost bursting the veins in their bodies doing so. But England lose and that joy and sense of being United immediately evaporates and our black players become the target.
“I wake up wanting to go through the game again in my head but cannot do that because the focus has shifted dramatically. It’s a shame that we are continually here asking the same questions and still not getting enough if any movement to help change this. These people I am talking about have shown us again who they really are!
“Social media companies please can we come together in creating a way to protect people on your platforms please…. Our young heroes need your attention too!”
The former England centre-back congratulated Italy for their victory saying the Azzurri were the best team in the tournament.
“We (England) have lost in the final of Euro 2020 to the best team in the tournament. Who have been unbeaten now in 34 games, that run spans nearly 3 years,” the 42-year-old wrote.
“The pre game energy in the stadium was the most electric I have seen inside Wembley stadium. The whole stadium were United in clapping both teams taking the knee (the non political act the squad are committed to). What a start to the biggest England game of our lives – everyone there United behind our national team.
“Up to this point the team have been superb, the players loved and idolised by the nation due to their efforts on the pitch – and rightly so. Now it’s crazy to me how 120 minutes of football and a penalty shoot out later that the feeling towards some of our England players drastically changed.”
