Donnarumma: ‘Let’s hope it’s just the beginning’

Gianluigi Donnarumma felt Italy ‘played a great match’ against Turkey but stressed the Azzurri ‘must be even more focused’ against Switzerland.

The 22-year-old played his 27th game with Italy on Friday and kept a clean sheet against the Turks to help the Azzurri claim three points in the Group A encounter.

Donnarumma has played seven consecutive Italy games without conceding a goal and praised his teammates after the great start.

But the young ‘keeper pointed out that the Azzurri must ‘keep our feet on the ground’ and continue to ‘prepare well’ for the next games.

“It was important to start well,” Donnarumma told UEFA. “We played a great match. But now me must keep our feet on the ground and continue to work and train well to do the same in the next ones too.

“There was a great atmosphere in Rome. We missed the fans so much and the affection they give us and will continue to give us.

“Let’s hope it’s just the beginning. Representing Italy means a lot to us. We do it with pride and will continue to honour this shirt until the very end.

Zoff ‘would be happy’ if Donnarumma beats his record

“We hope to go all the way. The first thing we said was to stay humble and down to earth, because we haven’t done anything yet.

“We won a great match, an important match for sure, but nor we have to think about the match against Switzerland, which is just as important.”

Italy could take a step towards the knockout stages with a win against Switzerland and Donnarumma stressed the Azzurri must remain ‘focused for 90 minutes’ against ‘an excellent team’.

“It would be very important,” he said. “We will have to do well, prepare well and try to win this match which is very important to us.

“Switzerland is an excellent team that plays football well. They also have a very attacking style and we must be very careful and focused for 90 minutes, do our things well, prepare as well as ever and hope to have a great game.

“We will have to be even more focused than in the first game.”
