Gaetano Castrovilli has been given the all-clear to resume training with Fiorentina, a month after a collision with the upright put him in hospital.
The 24-year-old Italy international was playing against Genoa on September 18 when he went sliding in to meet a low cross and crashed heavily into the frame of the goal with his ribs and abdomen.
The X-Rays ruled out fractures, but there was extremely heavy internal bruising, which saw him remain in hospital under observation for a few days.
He has since been ordered complete rest and today Fiorentina chief medic Luca Pengue confirmed to the club website that this was “not the usual injury you deal with in sports medicine.”
They could only “wait for nature to take its course” and the bruising to heal, which has now reached a stage allowing Castrovilli to resume training.
The player’s girlfriend also hit out angrily at a sarcastic comment from a Fiorentina fan on Instagram, who accused him of continuing to pocket wages while ‘resting’ at home.
“You wouldn’t say that if you knew the trauma he sustained. Internal haemorrhaging takes a while to recover from. Shame on you.”
