Trevor Sinclair stunned the talKSPORT studio and listeners at home by boldly claiming Man City are a bigger club than rivals Manchester United.
And his comment baffled Jamie O’Hara, who insisted not only are United a bigger club than City, they are the biggest club in world football!
The mood across Manchester would have been low on both the red and blue halves this Bank Holiday Monday, after a week in which the two clubs lost European finals.
Both were considered big favourites but both came out the wrong side of tight contents, as United missed out on another Europa League trophy on penalties to Villarreal and City wasted their chance to win their first ever Champions League title in a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea.
City’s defeat is a blip – albeit a big one – in what has otherwise been a stellar season from Pep Guardiola’s men as they lifted the Premier League title and Carabao Cup.
There’s no doubt City have been the dominant force domestically for the best part of the last decade, whereas United have won four trophies in that time and haven’t lifted a piece of silverware in four seasons.
That alone is enough for Sinclair to claim City are the biggest club in Manchester, saying their training facilities, stadium, richly talented squad of players and boasting one of the world’s great coaches puts them above their red rivals.
But O’Hara wasn’t having one bit of it, pointing out ‘you were playing Gillingham 20 years ago’, as they went toe-to-toe on Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast.
“I think Manchester City are leading the way,” said Sinclair.
“They’re catching up financially each year, the blueprint of the football club, the investment in the team, the playing staff, what they’re winning year-in, year-out.”
“Oh come on, Trev,” said O’Hara. “You were playing Gillingham and Tranmere 20 years ago! Come on! Let’s be realistic!
“Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, them and Real Madrid.
“Manchester City are nowhere near that yet. They are successful, a very successful club, but they haven’t won a European title, so you can’t put them anywhere near Manchester United.
“Sorry, you just can’t!”
Sinclair then asked: “For me, say I was asked to go to a football club, forget about my loyalties, what club are you going to go to?”
But O’Hara replied: “Manchester United!

“Ah, well I disagree with that,” said Sinclair. “I think you’d go to Manchester City straight away.
“When you look at the fundamentals and the foundations of the football club, the recruitment, the players, the stadium, the training ground, winning trophies year-in, year-out – Manchester United do not do that at this present time.
“So, for me, Manchester City are the bigger club.”
