Tottenham turn to Paulo Fonseca as their next manager – who was replaced by Jose Mourinho at Roma

Tottenham are in talks with Paulo Fonseca over becoming their new manager.

Spurs have been on the lookout for a new boss since Jose Mourinho’s departure in April – with the Portuguese sacked less than a week before their Carabao Cup final date with Manchester City.

Mourinho’s fellow countryman, Fonseca, looks set to become next Spurs boss

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy approached former Inter Milan, Juventus, Italy and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte last week over taking charge.

However, talks broke down, forcing Levy to look elsewhere.

Former boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been targeted, but Tottenham have been unable to get him out of his current club Paris Saint-Germain.

Now Spurs look set to replace Mourinho with the man he has replaced at Roma.

Fonseca, 48, was sacked by Roma in May, with Mourinho announced as his successor on the same day.

Fabio Paratici is understood to be instrumental in Tottenham’s decision to move for Fonseca.

Paritici is set to be announced as Spurs’ new sporting director having left Juventus last week after 11 years as their chief football officer.

If Fonseca does get the job, his appointment would undoubtedly raise eyebrows for a club who were in the Champions League final two years ago.

He is out of a job after two years at the Stadio Olimpico, where he failed to get the club back in the Champions League, delivering finishes of fifth and seventh in Serie A.

He was much more successful with Shakhtar Donetsk, winning three successive doubles, while also securing silverware with Braga and Porto.
