Tony Bellew clashed with Deontay Wilder in heated argument backstage during Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko weigh-in

Tony Bellew and Deontay Wilder famously confronted one another back in 2017, when they clashed during the weigh-in for Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko.

Following his surprise win over David Haye in March of that year, Bellew found himself in the strange position of being tipped for a heavyweight title shot.

It just so happened that he would bump into the then WBC champion.

Bellew was mid-interview when Wilder spotted him across the arena and shouted his trademark: “BOMB SQUAD.”

The Scouser shouted back: “I don’t need no squad.”

Wilder then walked past with only a small barrier in between them.

Bellew told him: “I’ve dealt with the second most dangerous heavyweight in the world already, I don’t need to fear no-one.”

Wilder replied: “You ain’t dealt with this power though.”

To which Bellew said: “I’ve dealt with someone more powerful than you.”

Wilder leaned over the barrier and asked Bellew: “You know what separates me from all the heavyweights? How I knock a motherf***er out.

“Not only have I broke eye sockets, not only have I broke bones, but I made them seize on the ground.”

Bellew responded: “Are you trying to scare you or scare me?

“I don’t care what you’ve done, you’re just a man with two arms, two legs. My boxing brain is far better than yours.”

The pair continued to exchange heated words for a further two minutes, but also showed respect ended their spat with a handshake.

The pair were on better terms the following night as they worked together with Sky Sports for Joshua vs Klitschko

Ultimately, Bellew and Wilder never fought as the Brit had to rematch David Haye instead.

After beating Haye again, he moved back down to cruiserweight for his fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

Bellew later explained the exact moment he decided not to challenge Wilder. He told iFL TV: “We slapped hands, I hugged him and he hugged me, and his arm literally wrapped around my whole body…

“It was as though his arm had tickled his chin and at that moment I knew this is never happening… I am never going anywhere near you.”
