Sir Alex Ferguson confirms he DID convince Cristiano Ronaldo to reject Man City and complete emotional Man United return following stunning Old Trafford debut

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he did convince Cristiano Ronaldo to snub a move to Manchester City and return to Old Trafford.

The Portugal captain capped an emotional second debut for Manchester United by scoring twice during a 4-1 victory against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Although he is 36, ‘CR7’ has transformed from a fanciful winger to a lethal striker during his 12-year hiatus away from England.

Spells at Real Madrid and Juventus have resulted in goals and trophies galore, yet a return to Manchester seemed on the cards in the final weeks of the transfer window.

However it was Pep Guardiola and the Citizens who were reportedly leading the chase as they sought a natural striker to replace Sergio Aguero following the expiration of his contract.

The news clearly irked Ferguson, who instantly got in touch with the veteran hitman to ensure he would be wearing red rather than blue.

Asked by Viaplay how involved in the deal he was, Sir Alex said: “A lot of people played their part, and I contributed knowing that, really, Cristiano wanted to come here. That was important.

“It worked very well.”

He added: “It’s certainly [a moment] full of excitement and also [a sense of] relief. A lot of relief because I couldn’t imagine him playing for Manchester City, I don’t think anyone could.

“That’s why we had to make steps to make sure he came here. The club then followed in very well, spoke to the Glazers, and it was done.”
