Sergio Ramos was linked with Manchester United transfer but then signed five-year deal with Real Madrid – could Raphael Varane do the same?

Jadon Sancho coming, Raphael Varane a real possibility – this is an incredibly exciting time for Manchester United.

Any moment now the Red Devils will announce the £73million signing of the England and Borussia Dortmund hotshot and France and Real Madrid ace Varane could be on his way to Old Trafford too.

Man United just missed out on signing Varane in 2011. Could they finally get him?

It’s understood Varane is ‘very happy’ with the terms Man United are offering but the Premier League side have so far fallen some way short of Real Madrid’s valuation.

The 28-year-old is in the final year of his contract so this window is realistically Real’s last chance to sell him. He’ll be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with a non-Spanish side in January with a view to a free transfer next summer.

But those more pessimistic Man United fans may feel the Varane story is beginning to look similar to a scenario that involved another Real Madrid defender – Sergio Ramos.

The Spaniard, now at Paris Saint-Germain, was linked with a move to Manchester back in 2015 and it was suggested he was open to leaving the Bernabeu.

Man United fans were in for a nasty shock, however

Ramos then signed a five-year contract and later revealed it was never his intention to leave Real Madrid.

“I know this renewal has taken a while but my heart and head have always been with Real Madrid so I couldn’t be happier,” he said in a press conference.

“I’ve never spoken about my renewal. With a contract that had two years to go, whatever the press want to say I respect but the reality is a bit different.

“My idea was to always be here and I always wanted to retire here if the president would allow it, and I’m thankful I have a new challenge to be the captain of this team. The priority is always Real Madrid, keeping our fans happy and winning titles.

Ramos has now left Real Madrid and joined Paris Saint-Germain – not Manchester United

“I’m being honest I never said I wanted to leave, I was quiet. I never said anything out of respect for my team-mates and the president, I never rang the office to ask for more money. I’m just very happy that I have renewed and I want to stay here for the rest of my career.

“At the end of the day I have been here almost my whole life. My first year was in Sevilla and the rest of my life has been here, that is sufficient motive to want to stay. There is nothing like this institution. My own happiness is the priority, in the end that was fundamental.”

Varane, who’s also reportedly wanted by PSG , hasn’t spoken publicly about being linked with Man United and naturally fans will be worried.

It couldn’t happen again, could it?
