Roy Keane reveals he ate doner kebab three hours before Manchester United cup tie as he makes Cristiano Ronaldo and Phil Foden comparison

Footballers today are finely tuned athletes, eating the right food to optimise their performance on the pitch.

But in Roy Keane’s day, there wasn’t so much of that… with the Manchester United legend admitting he once ate a doner kebab three hours before a cup game!

Keane was not so strict on his diet when he played compared to today’s stars

Keane made the revelations in a hilarious chat with Micah Richards as the lovable pair continued their ‘Road to Wembley’ series on Sky Sports.

Former Man City defender Richards asked his Irish best mate what kind of food he used to eat before games to prepare for 90 minutes of action.

And we’re quite sure he didn’t expect this answer…

He said: “I played a cup game before Crystal Palace at home, and three hours before the game I had a kebab.”

That revelation left Richards in hysterics – you’re probably hearing his infectious laugh in your head right now.

Once he’d calmed down, Keane continued: “A doner kebab from the chipper. Three hours before the game.

“When you’re younger you get away with it, but obviously you pay for it later on. You think you’re getting away with it, having a bit of a laugh about it and being a jack the lad.

“In fairness, though, I did live by myself and I didn’t have any food in the house.”

Keane also spoke about Foden’s diet and how he, and other players, will reap the benefits when they are in their 30s.

Foden is just 21, but has already won the Premier League three times

The Man United legend added: “I saw Foden getting interviewed the other day, he was on about cooking. He said ‘no, I’ve got a chef’. He’s got a chef!

“Foden’s fueling up properly. He’s probably having a proper breakfast.

“He’s recovering, he’s eating the proper foods at the right times, look at Ronaldo.

“So Foden will get the benefits also when he’s 36, 37. Guarantee he’ll still be playing at a high level.”
