Roman Reigns is finally the star WWE wanted him to be and his dominance will continue at WrestleMania Backlash with The Rock on his horizon

As we head into WrestleMania Backlash this Sunday – weird SEO crowbar name aside – Roman Reigns remains one of the most intriguing talking points.

The Tribal Chief has been a revelation for the company since returning at SummerSlam in 2020 after a four month exile.

Roman Reigns’ historic run as champion continues

His turn to the darkside was long overdue for the 35 year old, but, at the same time, the delay has only made the eventual turn far more powerful. More than anything, though, it’s the character itself that has made Reigns the hottest star in WWE and probably wrestling.

Aligning with Paul Heyman and enlisting the help of The Usos has been the exact tonic to the Tribal Chief, the head of the table.

Turning Roman Reigns would have been one thing. Having him start to cheat to win matches would have been another. But this is far more than a heel turn, it’s an evolution into the star Vince McMahon was trying to force people to accept.

Now, he is that star. The SmackDown ratings enjoyed a tangible boost upon his return and the shows has gone from floundering in the wake of the FOX deal to now being the best under the WWE umbrella.

Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman working together is big business

This Sunday at WrestleMania Backlash, Reigns takes on the long-deserving Cesaro with his Universal title on the line.

Many would love to see Cesaro finally ascend to the top of WWE after years of sterling in-ring work. The fans adore the Swiss Superman and everyone would like to see him reach the mountaintop even if it was just once.

It’s unlikely to happen here, though. Reigns is in the midst of a powerful run as champion and has just recently surpassed 250 days at the summit. Fans should expect a lot more days tacked on the end of that before he finally faces off against The Rock at WrestleMania.

The Rock said in a YouTube video: “Feels like the one that would make sense, right, would be Roman,” he said. “In terms of box-office draw.

Roman Reigns and The Rock are real-life cousins, but both men have been top wrestling stars in different generations

“I would be honoured not only to share the ring with Roman and to go back to the WWE. But of course, I would be honoured to have him raise his hand in that one.”

The Rock, a real-life cousin of Reigns, is easily one of the biggest superstars the wrestling world has ever seen and he is currently one of the highest-grossing actors in all of Hollywood.

A Reigns and Rock matchup would be a generation defining deal for WWE in the same way The Rock versus Hulk Hogan was at WrestleMania 18.

Many consider Rock Vs Hulk Hogan the greatest WrestleMania match ever

Realistically, with the way SmackDown is set-up, Reigns could have a long list of challengers all the way to The Rock next year.

He has Cesaro this Sunday, but names like Big E, Sami Zayn, Edge in a singles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Jimmy Uso – should the story go that way – Seth Rollins, Aleister Black and either Rey or Dominik Mysterio could all provide intriguing stories for the Universal champion.

None of those men have to beat Roman. They get a rub just by facing and feuding with him. The former Shield man has made magic with the likes of Jey Uso, Daniel Bryan and Kevin Owens thus far and WWE are all-in and preserving him as their top act for a long time to come.

Roman Reigns is officially the head of the family now with blessings from Aka and Sifa

The fact that he stacked both Daniel Bryan and Edge up for the pin at WrestleMania 37 should tell you everything.

He is their megastar of today and everything is going to be about him – or revolving around him – for the rest of this year. But, finally, WWE are doing it the right way.
