Dean Ashton insists England will not have an easy ride into the knockout stages at Euro 2020.
The Three Lions, who have to play Croatia, Scotland and the Czech Republic in Group D, are one of the bookmakers’ favourites to win the tournament, which kicks off on Friday night – with every game live on talkSPORT.
Harry Kane, Phil Foden and Jack Grealish could light up the tournament for England as Gareth Southgate looks to lead his country to a first ever European Championship triumph.
However, former England striker Ashton believes rival teams and supporters must be ‘laughing’ at how confident Three Lions fans are over winning Euro 2020.
He told talkSPORT: “I want to feel like I did about the 2018 World Cup.
“I want to feel proud of my country, proud of my side in terms of not thinking, ‘we’re going to win it, we’ve got these wonderful players – that automatically means we’re going to win it’.
“I bet other countries laugh at us when we act the way that we do and just dismiss teams like the Czech Republic, like we’re just going to beat Croatia.
“Croatia are an unbelievable side. They are World Cup finalists with still a lot of those players from that game still in the squad.
“They have huge amounts of experience yet because we’ve got some fantastic, exciting young players, we automatically just think, ‘we’re going to roll over these teams’.
“It’s going to be tough.”
Ashton is adamant Belgium and Croatia are the only teams of note that England have beaten since their semi-final finish at the 2018 World Cup.
He said: “What have we actually done to be favourites or second favourites [to win Euro 2020]? Who have we actually beaten since that World Cup?
“Belgium and Croatia are the two teams you’d say are very good teams – that’s it. Spain, but that was when they were properly on the decline.”
