Real Madrid have made a £160million bid for Kylian Mbappe – and the French superstar has told Paris Saint-Germain he wants to go.
The brilliant young forward, 22, is close to leaving PSG after four years at the club, with Madrid confident they will sign Mbappe before the August 31 deadline.
Mbappe’s contract at the Parc des Princes expires next summer and he recently rejected the club’s latest five-year offer.
The Ligue 1 giants risk losing one of the world’s most valuable players for nothing if they don’t sell now.
While an unnamed English club reportedly expressed interest, Madrid have been mooted as the Frenchman’s next club for years, with the Bernabeu Mbappe’s preferred destination.
Having won four Ligue 1 titles and a World Cup, the youngster is already among the best players in world football and keen for a new challenge.
The former Monaco star is famous for his blistering pace and boasts 142 career goals across 219 appearances for club and country.
A £160m deal would replicate the amount PSG paid to sign him from Monaco in 2017, cementing his place as the world’s second-most expensive player behind Neymar.
But many will question how Madrid can afford it, given the financial trouble experienced by both them and Spanish rivals Barcelona, who were forced to lose Lionel Messi to PSG.
Madrid have sold numerous players in recent years – including Martin Odegaard to Arsenal, Raphael Varane to Manchester United and Sergio Reguilon to Tottenham – to help fund the deal.
Their wage bill has been reduced dramatically, with legendary captain Sergio Ramos also leaving to join PSG on a free transfer earlier this summer.
Mbappe’s potential departure removes a superstar from a PSG team which was expected to boast the most fearsome front-line in world football this season, with Neymar and Messi alongside the Frenchman.
However, there are suggestions an Mbappe exit would pave the way for PSG to sign Ronaldo from Juventus.
The 36-year-old icon also has one year remaining on his current deal and reports claim he wants to leave Juve.
Selling Mbappe would give PSG the funds to buy Ronaldo this summer, rather than wait for the Portgual star to become a free agent.
That would see the two greatest players of their generation, Messi and Ronaldo, play alongside each other for the first time ever.
