Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘is not elite’ but Manchester United winning Europa League would be a ‘stepping stone’ towards catching up with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp

Manchester United have got to win the Europa League final tonight, insists Ally McCoist.

Not just because the Red Devils, one of the biggest clubs in world football, haven’t won a trophy in four years but also for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s managerial career.

United take on Unai Emery’s Villarreal in Gdansk and you can listen to full commentary of the clash LIVE on talkSPORT.

Their last piece of silverware was the 2017 Europa League and this is the first final they’ve been in since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in 2018.

Plenty believe the Norwegian isn’t the one to restore Man United‘s status as an elite club once again and McCoist believes Solskjaer can’t be called an elite manager right now.

However, beating Villarreal would be a ‘stepping stone’ in seeing him catch up with serial winners Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

“He’s not one of the elite, let’s be honest,” McCoist told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“He hasn’t had the chance to win major trophies like Mourinho, Guardiola and Klopp but this is a stepping stone in terms of his coaching and managerial career.

“United haven’t won anything in four years – they’ve got to win it. They have to win it.

“And if they do win it I think it’s a good season for them. Europa League champions, second place and in the Champions League next year, I do think it’s a good season for them.

“Then he has the opportunity and potential to bring one or two new faces in and go again and progress with his team.

“If they win tonight, it puts him up there with managers who have had great success but not with the longevity of the likes Guardiola, Mourinho and Klopp.”
