Nick Diaz vs Robbie Lawler confirmed with UFC favourite to take on former champion in September – 17 years after their first fight and six years after his last against Anderson Silva

Nick Diaz’s return to the UFC has been made official.

The legendary fighter will take on Robbie Lawler on September 25 as a five-round, non-title fight at UFC 266.

Nick Diaz is in great shape and ready to make a return to UFC after a six-year exodus

This fight comes 17 years after their first encounter, at UFC 47 in April 2004, when Diaz won by knockout in the second round on a card headlined by Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz.

Since then, Lawler became a UFC welterweight champion, while Diaz held the Strikeforce welterweight title, faced Georges St-Pierre for the UFC crown and last fought another legend in Anderson Silva in January 2015.

Diaz is now 37, however, he has kept himself in great shape and whenever the Diaz brothers fight, they attract fans.

Fans just love the Diaz brothers

Nate Diaz, Nick’s younger brother, made history earlier this year at UFC 263 when he competed in the first five-round, non-headlining, non-title bout ever held on a UFC pay-per-view with his decision loss to Leon Edwards.

Now, Nick has the chance to do the same and will become one of only four men to hold that distinction.

His opponent, Lawler, has lost four fights on the bounce and the 39-year-old last fell to Neil Magny in August 2020.

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski is expected to face one-time title challenger Brian Ortega in the main event of the same card.

Diaz has previously fought the biggest names in MMA from Georges St-Pierre to Anderson Silva and Lawler

For a long time, UFC president Dana White had said he was ‘out of the Nick Diaz business’ and was done trying to make fights for him.

But he changed his tune this year, saying in June: “I wasn’t very high on that,” White told UFC Arabia about Diaz’s anticipated return. “I didn’t think that it would happen but it looks like it will. It looks like Nick Diaz will fight this year.”

And now September cannot come soon enough for Diaz’s legions of loyal fans.

Speaking on the news, he wrote on Twitter: “I want to thank my Team
@CesarGracieBJJ, @Elfrogito and Ross Goodman for getting s*** done. It’s fight time.”
