Michael Carrick backed to stay as Manchester United manager until 2022 with club suffering blow in pursuit of Mauricio Pochettino

Michael Carrick could be the perfect Manchester United manager for the rest of the season after giving the ideal audition in his first game in charge, talkSPORT has been told.

The former midfielder oversaw a 2-0 win against Villarreal on Tuesday night, which saw United progress to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Carrick has started his Man United tenure in perfect fashion

There hasn’t been much to be happy about at Old Trafford for some weeks now, but yesterday’s win would have brought a much needed smile to the faces of Man United fans.

Whilst the club look for a permanent man to take charge at the club, Carrick has done his chances no harm to be given the job on an interim basis.

Especially with reports claiming that the club’s pursuit for Mauricio Pochettino has been blocked.

talkSPORT had revealed that the ex-Tottenham boss was ‘desperate’ to join the club now but may have to wait till the summer after his club were ‘furious’ about the rumours.

Now it almost looks certain the Red Devils will appoint someone until the end of the 2021/22 season until they can land the PSG boss.

And, according to Trevor Sinclair, Carrick may just be the ideal man to steady the ship after he made some bold calls against Villarreal, including dropping Bruno Fernandes and starting both Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho.

“Well I think he has given them something to think about, Michael Carrick,” Sinclair said on White & Jordan when asked who should be placed in interim charge.

“I thought the way that he changed the team, I thought was quite harsh, certain players, which at certain times as a manager you need to be, he dropped Fernandes and Rashford.

“So straight away, it’s not like he’s attention seeking, he looks at the team and he’s thinking ‘this team is not working’.

“He’s brought in Donny Van de Beek, he’s brought in a player that really struggled under Ole since his arrival, [Jadon] Sancho and both of them played really well in my opinion.

Van de Beek and Sancho were finally given the chance to show their talents and they didn’t disappoint

“Especially Sancho and I looked at Sancho’s performance being a winger last night and I thought, he’s playing differently than he’s played under Ole.

“Before I have never seen the wingers at Manchester United go that deep and work that hard for the team.

“Michael has changed things within the shape of the team, I think mentally with a few players, he’s obviously brought them into the side.

“He has won everything. Five Premier League trophies, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League.

“He won players’ player of the year in 2012/13, now that is the biggest accolade you could get from your teammates.”
