Manchester United ‘facing last-minute competition’ for Raphael Varane with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain considering 11th hour bids for £50m Real Madrid defender

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly making a late attempt to hijack Manchester United’s deal to sign Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

The Red Devils are believed to be close to signing the 28-year-old, who was part of France’s World Cup winning squad in 2018 and has also enjoyed huge success in his ten years in the Spanish capital.

Could Varane be on his way to Stamford Bridge rather than Old Trafford?

However, according to Marca, Chelsea now ready to gatecrash the deal and launch a counter bid of their own.

The report adds that PSG have also expressed an interest to sign the defender.

Varane only has one year left on his contract at Real Madrid, but it is claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is so keen on landing the Frenchman he is willing to splash some cash, rather than compete with a host of competitors when he becomes a free agent next summer.

It is claimed Real even wanted £60m for the centre-half, but have accepted a reduced fee for £50m after seeing Sergio Ramos leave the Bernabeu and join PSG for nothing.

United are also hoping to bring Kieran Trippier to Old Trafford and Arsenal legend Ray Parlour believes the two top class defensive transfers, plus the impending arrival of Jadon Sancho, will help United challenge Man City for the Premier League title this season.

Tuchel is said to be an admirer of Varane

“Certainly Varane is a top quality player, I was really impressed with him during the Euros, he’s an excellent defender and that will be a great signing for Manchester United,” said the talkSPORT pundit on Friday’s Breakfast show.

“We know what Trippier can do. It means Man United could play three at the back and while Wan-Bissaka is the main man, Trippier can play left-back as well, so he’s very good cover and he’s a great pro as well.

“He was excellent around the England camp and he is very experienced now after two great years at Atletico, so he’ll be another good signing for the money.

Trippier helped Atletico Madrid win a first LaLiga title in seven years last season, but is said to be ‘desperate’ to return to the Premier League

“That’s what Man United have got to do, they’ve got to compete and get close to Man City. You can’t stand still in the Premier League.

“Maguire and Stones were a very good partnership during the Euros and I can imagine Maguire and Varane will be a decent partnership.

“If you’ve got a good defence you’ve always got a chance, and with the attacking players they’ve got, and with Sancho coming in, it will give them a much better chance of getting closer and challenging for that title.”
