Man City will send ‘strong message’ this summer as Pep Guardiola backed to spend big on striker amid Harry Kane and Erling Haaland transfer links

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has vowed to send a ‘strong message’ in the transfer market this summer as the club seek a replacement for Sergio Aguero.

The Premier League champions are on the hunt for a new world-class striker after all-time top scorer Sergio Aguero joined Barcelona on a free transfer.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane has been linked with a £120million move to the Eithad as he eyes a move away from the north London club in search of silverware.

Kane has even named Kevin De Bruyne as his ideal teammate, fuelling speculation he wants to join City.

Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland is also reported to be on City’s radar having lit up the Bundesliga this season.

City chief Al Mubarak has now revealed the club will look to make a statement in transfer window after winning the Premier League and Carabao Cup in the 2020/21 season, and going so close to Champions League glory, as they look to kick on again.

He told the club’s website: “You need to constantly bring talent into the team, refresh and particularly when you are at a high level on the top.

“Having won the league it is not the team to sit back and be content, that is the biggest mistake. This is the time to send a strong message that there is no contentment, you are not satisfied with just winning the league.

“We lose a very important legend in Sergio Aguero, very hard shoes to fill but I am confident we will find the right player to fill those shoes.

“There are other areas in the team that need investment, not too many, it is not about numbers, it is about quality.

“The squad is a phenomenal squad, you don’t win the Premier League and get to the Champions League final if you don’t have a good squad. We will bring quality into the squad in a couple of key positions.”

Al Mubarak maintains his full confidence in manager Pep Guardiola, despite his failure to win a Champions League trophy in his five years at City.

He said: “This partnership has been a great partnership.

“He is in the right environment, he has the right infrastructure around him.

“We have the greatest trust and the greatest relationship and we have achieved so much. The journey goes on and it will go on as long as Pep is happy and we’re happy.”
