Man City star Phil Foden insists new hairstyle is not a tribute to Paul Gascoigne, despite striking resemblance to England legend ahead of Euro 2020

Phil Foden insists his new hairstyle is not a tribute to Paul Gascoigne ahead of Euro 2020.

Eagle-eyed fans spotted the Man City star’s bleached hair is similar to Three Lions icon Paul Gascoigne’s look at Euro 1996.

Gascoigne came close to leading England to a Euro 1996 triumph

Gascoigne was one of the stars of Euro 1996 as England were knocked out on penalties by Germany in the semi-finals, and his barnet caught the eye too.

Foden has already seen himself compared to the legendary midfielder and the decision to dye his locks prior to the tournament takes the similarity to another level.

The 21-year-old will be hoping to lead England to a first ever European Championship triumph as their campaign kicks off against Croatia on Sunday.

Foden, who won the PFA’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2020/21 season, uploaded a picture of his new hairstyle with the caption ‘Euro 96 vibes’.

Foden has a unique hairstyle for Euro 2020

Despite the striking resemblance to Gascoigne, Foden has played down any link to the former Tottenham star.

He said: “I’ve had the same haircut for what seems like ages now. So I thought I’d just try something new.

“I woke up this morning to a lot of comparisons to Gazza and Eminem. It was my own thing and people have turned it into something else!”

Foden has admitted he would like to emulate Gascoigne’s influence on the England team this summer.

He said: “I remember watching highlights on the TV of Gazza.

“He was an unbelievable player. He knew what it meant for the country and what he did.

Gascoigne was a fiery character on and off the pitch during his playing days

“It wouldn’t be too bad if I tried to bring a bit of Gazza on the pitch.”

In a new talkSPORT exclusive documentary, Gazza & McCoist: Together Again, Gascoigne recalled how Rangers fans dyed their hair blonde to honour him when he joined the club in 1995.

He said: “I remember meeting the chairman upstairs at the ground and he said ‘have you seen outside?’ I said, ‘no, why?’ ‘Have a look outside’.

“I just looked outside and saw all the fans. My hair was blonde, all of theirs was yellow – bless them. That was fantastic.

“I remember the gaffer saying you’ll have a laugh, be serious when you play, but you’ll have a laugh with the lads in the dressing room.”

Meanwhile, talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara believes Foden is BETTER than Gascoigne was.

He said: “Watching Foden this season he’s really come to the fore and made himself one of the top three players at Manchester City.

Foden is one of England’s most exciting young stars

“I was looking at it thinking, and I know people always compare him to Gascoigne, but I look at Foden and think he’s better than Gascoigne.

“I know that’s a big statement, but it’s just in terms of the way he’s going in his career and the way he plays. He’s doing it on the big stage already and he’s just a kid.

“And to do it at Manchester City in a Pep Guardiola team and to be so young and dominating games – two winners in two [Champions League] legs in a huge fixture.

“I just think he’s better than Gazza. For me, Gazza was my idol growing up. He won the FA Cup, he won the Scottish Premiership – we all know that doesn’t count as it means nothing.”
