Lorient star Yoane Wissa set for more medical examinations before returning to training after undergoing emergency surgery

Lorient star Yoane Wissa will undergo more medical tests this week before being given the green light to return to full training.

The 24-year-old was the target of an unprovoked attack at his home last month, which saw him suffer serious burns to his eyes.

Wissa scored 11 times in 38 appearances for the Ligue 1 side last season

An unnamed woman, aged 32, was subsequently arrested for the liquid attack on the DR Congo forward.

Wissa underwent emergency surgery following the incident, with doctors concerned that he could suffer permanent eye problems as a result.

The forward was also told by medical professionals that they couldn’t guarantee that he will regain all of his visual activity, putting his professional football career into major doubt.

Lorient boss Christophe Pelissier has said Wissa will need to pass further medical examinations before participating in training as preparations ramp up towards the start of the Ligue 1 season.

It’s understood that a number of French and European clubs are closely monitoring Wissa, who hit double figures for his club side last season.

Following the incident last month Lorient condemned the act of violence, while offering an update on their player’s current state.

A club statement read: “FC Lorient learned this morning that Yoane Wissa had been the victim of an assault at his home during the night before being hospitalised urgently. Yoane must undergo surgery today.

“The club, in shock, holds to show its support for Yoane and his family and wish his player a speedy recovery.

“FC Lorient is counting on justice to allow the perpetrator of this attack to be condemned.”
