Liverpool keen to sign £40million Ibrahima Konate swoop as reports claim Jadon Sancho could replace Mohamed Salah amid Barcelona and Real Madrid transfer interest

Liverpool are set to launch a bid for Ibrahima Konate this summer.

The RB Leipzig star is regarded as one of Europe’s top young defenders and has formed a formidable partnership with Bayern Munich-bound Dayot Upamecano.

The Telegraph claim Konate will cost Liverpool £40million with Jurgen Klopp prepared to trigger his release clause.

The Reds have been without their three senior centre-halves Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip through injury for the majority of the season.

Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak were signed for £2m and on loan from Preston and Schalke, respectively, in January. However, they are not long-term solutions for Klopp.

Davies is yet to make his Liverpool debut, while Kabak has struggled for consistency.

Konate remained coy on his RB Leipzig future in a recent interview.

He told Bild: “There are often rumours in football and many believe them immediately. I or my agents didn’t get a call from Liverpool.

“I also have big goals with RB Leipzig. These are currently the best possible results in the Bundesliga, reaching the cup final and the U21 European Championship with France.

“I don’t want to be Dayot’s successor. I’m me. We both came to Leipzig in 2017 and played well together here.

“Unfortunately, our paths are now parting. I’ll give Dayot the new job [at Bayern Munich] and continue doing my thing here. I have a contract until 2023. And contracts are there to fulfil.”

Meanwhile, Bild claim Liverpool have shortlisted Borussia Dortmund attacker Jadon Sancho as a possible replacement for Mohamed Salah.

The Egypt forward has scored 123 goals in 198 games since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017.

And Bild claim Liverpool are keeping tabs on Sancho if Salah decides to move on at the end of the campaign.

Earlier this season, Salah refused to rule out playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona in the future.

He said: “I hope to be able to play for many more years.

“Why not? No one knows what’s going to happen in the future. So… maybe one day, yes. It’s not up to me.”
