Lionel Messi, Fernandinho, Juan Mata and Sergio Ramos among star-studded list of out of contract players in 2021 with Man United, Chelsea and City all benefitting

This summer is likely to see some of football’s most sought after names available for nothing.

Lionel Messi is among a host of star players in the last month of their contracts, while others have already sorted out their futures.

Messi is yet to sign a new contract with Barcelona

Lucas Vazquez has agreed terms with Real Madrid for another three years and he will be joined by David Alaba, who was signed on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.

Sergio Aguero is another big name to leave on a free as he ended his 10-year association with Man City to sign for Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Georginio Wijnaldum quit Liverpool to join Paris Saint-Germain for nothing, despite being heavily linked to Barcelona.

But which other out-of-contract players are still in limbo? has picked out some of the best who are set to be free agents at the end of June, starting with Barcelona legend Messi.

Lionel Messi: Barcelona – 33 years old

Messi was close to leaving last summer, but eventually opted to remain in Spain.

However, it is thought he is more open to signing a new deal at Camp Nou now there has been a change of presidency.

He is said to be on the verge of extending his 17-year stay at Barcelona, but should an unlikely u-turn take place the options in Europe are Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City where his old boss, Pep Guardiola is in charge.

Gianluigi Donnarumma: Milan – 22 years old

The goalkeeper is only 22, but has been a mainstay between the sticks since he was a teenager.

Reports in January suggested Milan had offered Donnarumma a deal worth up to £6million annually, but no agreement has been made between the two parties.

And this apparent stalling on signing a new contract is said to have alerted Chelsea.

A move to Stamford Bridge would surely spell the end of Kepa’s time in England, with Edouard Mendy thriving for the Blues since his switch from Rennes last summer.

Sergio Ramos: Real Madrid – 35 years old

He may be 35, but the Real Madrid captain is still one of the best in his position – and he knows it.

Having spent the last 15 years in the Spanish capital, he believes he has earned the right to command his next move.

“I have earned the right to make whatever decision I want.

“I will perform at the highest level. If not, I stay at home. If not, it wouldn’t be worth it. That I’m fine with my age is no accident.”

Man United have previously been interested in signing him, while PSG are also an option.

Jerome Boateng: Bayern Munich – 32 years old

Bayern Munich sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has confirmed that Jerome Boateng will leave the club this summer.

The decision was a joint one and Salihamidzic is hopeful the long serving centre-back leaves with titles.

Having joined Bayern in 2011, he has won eight Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues.

Man United tried to sign him in 2018 when Jose Mourinho was in charge and Boateng revealed he considered them and PSG.

“Not because I wanted to leave Bayern Munich, by all means. It was no escape, but rather the thrill of a new challenge. I feel completely contented at Bayern – one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Now he will get that new challenge – and Mourinho is still looking for an experience centre-back.

Memphis Depay: Lyon – 27 years old

After losing the race to sign Wijnaldum to PSG, Ronald Koeman will hope he can lure another former Netherlands colleague, Depay, to Barcelona.

The Barcelona failed to win LaLiga in his debut season in charge and will look to bolster his squad in the summer transfer market.

Depay was targeted last year, but ended up remaining in France.

If the 27-year-old former Man United player is signed it would be good business with Eric Garcia already joining on a free transfer from Man City.

Patrick van Aanholt: Crystal Palace – 30 years old

Van Aanholt has been known for his attacking qualities rather than his defensive ones throughout his career.

He has been with Crystal Palace since January 2017, but is set to find himself out of contract soon.

With the emergence of young left-back Tyrick Mitchell, Van Aanholt’s playing time was limited towards the end of the 2020/21 season.

And Mitchell’s form could play a part in whether Crystal Palace choose to offer a new contract to Van Aanholt, who has been linked with Galatasaray.

Van Aanholt is currently with the Netherlands for Euro 2020

Juan Mata: Manchester United – 33 years old

Mata is reportedly in talks with Manchester United over a new contract.

However, the 33-year-old started just six Premier League matches last season and could look elsewhere in a bid to improve his game time.

Mata is one of the most experienced players in the Manchester United dressing room, something which could come into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s thinking when deciding to keep him or not.

Mata has been a Man United player since 2014

Fernandinho: Man City – 36 years old

Fernandinho is a modern day Man City legend with four Premier League triumphs in his eight years at the club.

The 36-year-old’s playing time has lessened over the years, especially since the arrival of Rodri in 2019.

But he has still remained a vital cog for Pep Guardiola’s side behind the scenes.

Reports have claimed he is in discussions over a one-year extension with Man City, but he is yet to agree any new deal.

David Luiz: Arsenal – 34 years old

Luiz’s two-year spell with Arsenal has come to an end.

The 34-year-old was a regular starter in Mikel Arteta’s defence and helped the Gunners win the FA Cup in the 2019/20 campaign.

Luiz had been linked with a move to Brazilian club Flamengo, but he has reportedly been unable to reach an agreement with them.

Luiz will not be short of suitors in the summer

Hakan Calhanoglu: AC Milan – 27 years old

Calhanoglu looks set to leave AC Milan at the end of the month after failing to agree on a new contract.

It has been claimed the Turkey midfielder is being targeted by Arsenal, who failed to sign Aston Villa-bound Emi Buendia earlier this week.

Calhanoglu, who was previously a target for Man United, is known for his creativity and ability to score goals from range.

Danny Rose: Tottenham – 30 years old

Tottenham bid farewell to Danny Rose in an emotional video last week after 14 years of service.

Rose was frozen out by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho and failed to make a single appearance last season.

Despite his lack of game time over the past year, Rose, who has won 29 England caps, is likely to still have a lot in the tank at the age of 30.

Rose will look to prove to his doubters that he can still play at a high level
