Lee Bowyer says he will make Manchester United starlet Tahith Chong a ‘better player’ during loan spell at Birmingham

Birmingham boss Lee Bowyer insists Tahith Chong will return to Manchester United as a better player next year.

The 21-year-old winger has joined the Blues on a season-long loan as they aim to push for promotion from the Championship in the upcoming season.

Chong has made 16 first-team appearances for Man United

Chong struggled for form and playing time in loan spells with Werder Bremen and Club Brugge last term, but Bowyer’s track record with young players stands him in good stead.

The former Charlton manager has worked wonders with Joe Aribo, Josh Cullen and Karlan Grant in recent years.

And Bowyer is expecting Chong to be the next young player to star for him.

He told talkSPORT: “I don’t like to speak about myself too much, but my record with loan players is good. It’s very good.

“Man United would have done their homework and recognised that and they wanted Chong to come here and Chong wanted to come here, which is important.

Chong had his loan with Werder Bremen cancelled midway through last season

“My job is to send him back a better player. Do I believe that will happen? Yes, because it’s happened to every player I’ve worked with.

“It’s good to have a club of Man United’s stature to trust me with such a talented player.

“I’m grateful to all the clubs because they loan us players, just like how other clubs should be grateful to us when we loan them our players. It’s the way it works.

“I’ll look after them and make sure they improve.”
