Kofi Kingston says Omos is going to be ‘very, very special’ and backs Big E to be the face of WWE

Kofi Kingston is back in the main event scene in WWE and fans have welcomed it with open arms.

The New Day man arrived there back in 2019 on the wave of KofiMania that took the wrestling world by storm.

Kofi Kingston won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35

He won his first and so far only WWE title at WrestleMania 35, but would lose it in seven seconds to Brock Lesnar on SmackDown’s debut on FOX six months later.

Now, Kingston will battle Drew McIntyre for a shot at current WWE champion Bobby Lashely on RAW next week.

talkSPORT caught up with the 39-year-old to discuss making it back to the main event scene and much more.

On returning to the WWE title picture…

“Yeah, it felt good. I don’t know what I’ll be doing, but someone like Bobby Lashley has done so much. Very similar story to mine in terms of his pilgrimage to the WWE Championship.

“He’s been grinding for a very, very long time. It’s a shame he’s partnered with the dastardly MVP along the way, but it is what it is.

Kofi Kingston’s WWE Championship win at WrestleMania was a moment long overdue

“I went out there last week to make a statement, me and Bobby tore it down and I was able to get a pin over the WWE champion. Not to mention, nobody has pinned Bobby Lashley since he become WWE champion except for me!

“You never know what’s going to happen. I don’t think anyone expected me to answer the challenge so now we’ll see where it goes.”

On Big E’s solo run thus far…

“Big E has every single tool to be at the top of this industry and the face of this company and his solo run on SmackDown thus far has proven that 10-times over.

“A lot of people had wanted to see Big E do his own thing for a while and they’re getting what they want right now and he’s delivering in the way only he can. When I see him out there doing great things every times he’s out there, I can’t help but smile because he deserves it.

“We’ll see with what happens with Money in the Bank. Him and Apollo [Crews], right? Apollo has been doing great and has really begun to find himself with Commander Azeez.

Big E and Kofi Kingston had been tagging while Xavier Woods recovered from an Achilles injury, but now Big E is having singles matches

“That’s what this industry is really all about, people finding their characters so they can execute and deliver. Apollo does so many amazingly acrobatic things in the ring and there’s no way he shouldn’t be featured.

“So to see him with the Intercontinental Championship – I didn’t want to see him beat Big E for it – but at the same time, I’m happy to see somebody who has worked really hard and has hung around in the game finally get their due.”

On Big E potentially taking on Roman Reigns and New Day facing The Usos at WrestleMania

“Man, that would be amazing! But again, I’m not one to count chickens before they hatch. I don’t even know what’s happening on the show today! [laughs].

“But, it would be amazing. The Usos have got to get on the same page, though. I don’t really know what’s going on there with those two and Roman and that whole deal. They’ve got to figure some things out if they want to face us.

“We’re always a unit! E is on SmackDown and we’re on RAW, but so what! You know what we are. We’re always tightly knit no matter what the wedge-drivers try to do. We’re just diversifying our stock.”

On helping Omos at WrestleMania 37…

“It was great. Honestly, that’s one of my favourite things in the business being able to give to the younger talent. Omos is going to be something special. He already is something very, very special.

“He has a surprising wise-beyond-his-years ability to absorb knowledge. To have a WrestleMania moment so early in his career, very few people can do that.

“How many people can say they debuted at WrestleMania and won a title? That is an amazing thing.

Kofi Kingston was delighted he could help Omos get off to a great start in WWE

“You set the bar really high for yourself and you have to work to exceed that, but I was really, really happy for him to have that moment because like I said, he is going to be very special in terms of the big men and giants in our industry.

“Keep your eye on the lookout for Omos. Not to mention AJ [Styles] becoming a Grand Slam champion, that was pretty cool to be a part of as well.”
