Josh Taylor compares boxing to WWE after ‘farce’ Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul fight as Ricky Hatton calls it ‘s*** for boxing’

Josh Taylor has described the intrusion of YouTubers like Logan and Jake Paul into boxing as a ‘farce’ and compared their bouts to something you’d see in WWE.

The undisputed super-lightweight champion of the world put in one of the best performances by a Brit overseas to defeat Jose Ramirez and become the first four-belt world champion from these shores.

Jake and Logan Paul have made huge waves in the world of boxing

Yet the Scot received very little attention from TV stations before the bout, with a lack of coverage surrounding the event in Las Vegas understandably annoying the ‘Tartan Tornado’.

Instead, outlets such as Sky decided to instead plug the exhibition bout between the elder Paul brother and 50-0 boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, which took place on Sunday night in Miami.

After eight rounds of what could be described as boxing, there was no winner crowned and both men instead talked about the enormity of their bank balances in the post-fight press conference.

Speaking to talkSPORT live from Glasgow, Taylor admitted there were some positives from the influx of social media stars into the squared circle, yet the damage it is causing boxing could be irreparable.

He said: “I look at it from two different ways; I look at it from one way as bringing new sets of eyes to the sport.

“It’s brining in young kids that are into their gaming and YouTube into the sport, it’s bringing fans and young kids like that.

“And if a few of them are interested in the sport and start training and following it then that’s good, it’s bringing new people to the sport and getting new eyes to the sport.

“But in other ways, it is making a mockery of the sport and they’re not competitive fights, it’s guys who have never boxed before in their life. They go on stage and start turning boxing almost into the WWE.

“Into a bit of a show, a bit of a farce, a bit of a circus and it’s quite frustrating sometimes when you have got a lot of fighters that, including myself, have dedicated their lives to get to where they get to and get big fights.

“They kind of get shunned and overlooked by something like this; a past it, old-timer – albeit a very good old-timer – but he is past his best and he’s fighting a guy from YouTube.

“It can be quite frustrating that way, but it is good for the sport, too.”

Ricky Hatton, who also competed at 140lbs during his incredibly successful career, shared a ring with Mayweather during his pomp and held nothing back in his withering assessment of the fight.

Describing it as ‘s*** for boxing’ on Instagram, the ‘Hitman’ echoed Taylor’s sentiments by suggesting the American no longer needs to worry about his engrossed bank balance, rather than integrity of his reputation.

Taylor added: “It’s frustrating and I don’t mean to disrespect Logan Paul or Floyd Mayweather, but Floyd Mayweather is the best of this generation.

“It just looks like he is damaging his name and his legacy in the sport by doing this, just for a few quid. He’s not short of a few quid, he’s made hundreds of hundreds of millions!

“He doesn’t need an extra £50million, what is that going to do to his bank account? It is what it is, but it is quite frustrating to watch.”
