Jorge Masvidal warned the world he needed just six weeks to beat Kamaru Usman and ‘Gamebred’ is certainly going out his way to prove he is right.
Last year, Usman cruised to a decision victory against the Miami-native at UFC 251 on Fight Island to retain his welterweight title.
Yet there were several caveats associated with the win; Masvidal took the fight on just six days’ notice and was forced to cut 20lbs just to make the weight limit.
In the Octagon on Fight Island immediately after the bout, he even told UFC President he felt as though he could beat Usman if granted the opportunity again.
After weighing in almost a year later for UFC 261 and with a full camp behind him, it seems as though ‘Gamebred’ is going to live up to his promise and is in prime condition.
Weighing in first in Jacksonville, Masvidal hit the scales at a ready 170lbs – bang on championship weight – looking far more ripped than he did in July on Fight Island.
Whereas last time the veteran needed a towel to make weight, he hit the scales first on the night in the Sunshine State and looked raring to go for his 50th professional MMA bout.
Masvidal says should he win at UFC 261, he’ll give the Nigerian Nightmare the same courtesy.
“Definitely, he gave me a chance,” Masvidal said at the UFC 261 pre-fight press conference.
“Whether we see eye-to-eye on things or not, he gave me another chance to compete, so I’ll definitely give him the chance to compete again.”
