Jake Paul is a name that just won’t leave the world of boxing and MMA and, love or hate it, it appears he’s here to stay for a good while yet.
Youtuber Paul knocked out ex-UFC star Ben Askren in April in the first round of their bizarre exhibition bout.
The 24-year-old has certainly ruffled a few feathers during his controversial furore into the sporting world so far and he’s now looking for his next opponent.
There’s no shortage of names who are willing to step into the ring with the brash young American and set some records straight.
But who will Paul face next? Here, we take a look at five potential opponents…
McGregor kick-started the whole UFC/boxing crossover in 2017 when he whipped the global sport up into a frenzy for his exhibition bout against fellow superstar Floyd Mayweather.
The back and fourth between the two was nothing short of spectacular in the build-up and the fight didn’t disappoint either before Mayweather claimed his win in the tenth round.
Jake Paul is certainly modelling himself on McGregor’s persona and has launched attack after attack on the Notorious.
Paul would clearly love to lure McGregor into a bout and secure the payday that would come with it.
McGregor certainly has other things on his mind for now – chiefly his trilogy clash with Dustin Poirier in July – but could indulge Paul in the future.
With McGregor seemingly not going to happen anytime soon, Paul has recently called out the Irishman’s old rival Diaz.
Goading him on social media, Paul will know he can get a rise out of Diaz easily and set up a narrative for the fight.
Diaz has been an avid observer of Paul’s exploits so far and is at the top of the list to face him next at the moment.
On facing Diaz, Paul said: “I think people will immediately write me off. Even someone watching this interview right now is like, ‘Oh, this kid’s crazy. Nate Diaz is such a dog, he’s going to kill Jake, he’s out of his mind.’ But they’re going to tune in and watch, right?
“It’s two massive names, and it would be a massive pay-per-view, and then when they see me obliterate him, they’re jaws are going to be dropped – they’re not going to know how to react. They’re going to think it’s rigged again.
“And at that moment in time, I’ll be undeniable to fight Conor McGregor, because I beat the guy that beat you, Conor. And the Jake Paul vs. Conor fight is a massive fight. I’m like, why wait? I don’t need to be in this sport forever. I’m not trying to get 100 fights. Let’s do the biggest fights right away.”
Critics of Paul want him to get into the ring with an actual boxer next to truly test out his skills.
One name that would fit perfectly with the circus of it all would be Fury – not Tyson but his half brother and 5-0 fighter Tommy.
Tommy is no stranger to the celebrity limelight following his stint on Love Island.
But he is now focused on building a name for himself in the sport of boxing and has claimed five convincing wins to date.
He has had his own social media beef with Paul and such a fight would certainly boost his global appeal.
Would the risk of losing and curtailing his career be worth it?
Paul wanted to face UFC fighter Danis before his bout with Ben Askren got confirmed.
The two have clashed several times online and in person and Danis is desperate to ‘save the MMA community’ by getting a shot at Paul.
Similar to the Askren fight, this bout would be easy to book and get sorted but it depends if Danis can shout louder than some more illustrious names.
Cormier is a wrestler by trade like Askren but also a far better striker than his fellow UFC ace.
DC came head-to-head with Paul at UFC 261 to try and set him straight and could be convinced into a fight.
Paul is keen and said: “Of course, he’s going to duck the boxing offer. And by the way, there’s way more money in boxing, so we would make more money in a boxing match. And again, I’m a boxer.
“I never said that I will beat Daniel Cormier in an MMA fight. If he comes and boxes me, I will beat him.
“And maybe a part of him knows that, which is why it’s funny. Why would he not accept that offer? If we fought, that would be the most amount of money that he will ever make in any of his fights, by far.”
