‘Important’ Chelsea star Thiago Silva set for contract extension as club legend Gianfranco Zola hails his impact on young teammates

Chelsea superstar Thiago Silva is set to have his contract extension confirmed after helping them win the Champions League.

Last summer, the Brazilian signed on a one-year deal at Stamford Bridge, with an option to extend it for a further campaign, and this will now be triggered.

Silva won the Champions League for the first time

Silva, 36, did well in his debut Premier League season, despite concerns about his age.

And to top it all off he helped the Blues to Champions League glory – the first in his career – even if his participation was ended early through injury.

His addition to the Chelsea squad has been vital, particularly during Thomas Tuchel’s reign, with their defence looking much improved.

Meanwhile, club legend Gianfranco Zola insists his arrival has also been beneficial for the squad and aided promising starlets like Reece James and Mason Mount.

Silva had to watch most of the match on the sideline due to a first-half injury

Zola told Monday’s talkSPORT Breakfast: “I think one of the successes of this Chelsea team has been has been that he has been able to mix talented young players with more good experienced players.

“I do believe this is a very good mix. You have to have both because they both push each other.

“Thiago, I don’t know him personally, but I can see the way he behaves on the pitch and the way he plays, he must be very important for the young ones, in terms of being an example and ways to conduct yourself on the pitch.”
