Hafthor Bjornsson reveals how Conor McGregor sparring session happened and says he was ‘in no shape at all’ and wore jeans as he admits Eddie Hall postponement left him disappointed

Hafthor Bjornsson’s now famous sparring session with Conor McGregor was not planned, the former World’s Strongest Man revealed to talkSPORT.

The clip, from 2015, showing The Mountain from Game of Thrones against two-weight UFC champion McGregor went viral on social media for obvious reasons.

The size difference was ridiculous, Thor dwarfed the Irish fighter and had a serious weight advantage.

The pair chased each other around the mat, grappling and trading friendly shots.

Now Thor, a Reign Total Body Fuel ambassador, has explained how it all came about.

He told talkSPORT.com: “For me, he was a cool guy. Nice enough to allow me to come to his session, watch his session and grab a picture.

“After, we hung out and it was super cool. It was funny because if you look at the video again, I’m wearing jeans.

“I’m basically just going in to get a picture, then somehow this grappling just happened out of nowhere.

“We grappled for like two minutes then it was finished. The whole video you see online is basically everything we did that day.

“Not at all (was I expecting it). I was not in shape for fighting at all. After those two minutes I was out of breath.

“I was just training for strongman and was in no shape at all for grappling or doing anything like that.”

Since that video was taken, Thor went on to win World’s Strongest man and now transitioned to boxing.

He was due to face fierce rival Eddie Hall this weekend, but an injury to The Beast saw that postponed until next year.

Instead, he will face arm wrestling legend Devon Larratt.

Thor said: “I’m always up for a challenge, always up for (it). It doesn’t matter who I’m fighting. Every time I’ve been in the ring, it has been a great experience for me. I’m new to boxing, I’ve been doing this for a year and a half.

“Every single time I step into the ring, I’m learning.

“It’s kind of weird, because I like the guy (Larratt). It’s weird fighting someone you like, it’s better when you don’t like someone.

“We are both treating it professionally, we are both keeping distance until after the fight.

“I wave at him and that’s about it. Just to make it more professional. At the end of the day, this is a fight and I’m going in there to punch him.

“After the fight it is going to be cool.”

On his fight with Hall being postponed, he added: “Of course, I was disappointed he got injured, but there was nothing I could have done.

“It’s out of my hands, I just have to move on. Focus on myself, focus on training and do what I can do.

“Improve my game and my skills. Whenever he is ready and healthy, then we will fight.

“Hopefully that is going to be early this year.”
