Gareth Southgate dropping Jadon Sancho is ‘understandable’ as Borussia Dortmund winger has ‘underperformed’ for England, talkSPORT told amid Manchester United transfer links

Jadon Sancho’s omission from Gareth Southgate’s squad to face Croatia was no surprise, as the England boss ‘hasn’t fallen in love with him yet’.

That is the view of talkSPORT’s European football expert Mark Langdon, who understands why the Borussia Dortmund winger wasn’t selected in the 23-man squad for the 1-0 opening Euro 2020 win at Wembley.

Sancho and Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell were the most notable absentees from the matchday squad, as Southgate opted to use natural right-back Kieran Trippier on the left of a back-four.

It led to criticis from a host of pundits, but ultimately the selection paid off as the Three Lions secured a comfortable victory.

News that goalkeeper Dean Henderson is still struggling with injury and again missed training on Monday, and yet was included in the matchday squad, makes Southgate’s call seem even stranger.

However, Langdon has pinpointed Sancho performances on the international stage as to why he was left out.

“I’m not overly surprised as Southgate has never fallen in love with Jadon Sancho,” he told talkSPORT’s Trans Europe Express.

“I definitely feel like the England supporters haven’t seen the best of Jadon Sancho.

“He definitely hasn’t shown all of his best moments at Dortmund and we have seen them when he comes in and cuts from the left.

“You have to leave somebody out. [Marcus] Rashford and [Jack] Grealish – he maybe felt that he had enough options out wide.”

Sancho had a difficult start to the 2020/21 campaign but he finished the season in fine style as the German club secured a spot in the Champions League with a fourth-placed finish.

The 21-year-old looks to be headed to Manchester United this summer, with the two clubs in negotiations over a fee and personal terms agreed with the player.

And Langdon is adamant a right-winger is exactly what the Red Devils need as they look to challenge Man City for the Premier League crown next term.

“They’ve got the money to be able to make that kind of signing and I think right wing is an area where they’re definitely looking to improve,” he said.

“The one draw back is that he tends to be at his best when he gets a connection with his full-back and [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka probably isn’t the best attacking right-back out there.

“I know they’ve been linked with Trippier as well to add some impetus down the flank but, for Manchester United, Sancho would be worth paying for.

“I know it’s a lot of money [reportedly up to £85m/€100m] but I feel like they’ve got the money and he improves them significantly in an area where they need a really strong player.”
