Floyd Mayweather sent Dustin Poirier a thank you on social media after collecting a cool $85,000 after betting against Conor McGregor at UFC 264.
McGregor suffered what broken ankle as he lost to his bitter lightweight rival via doctor’s stoppage in round one in Las Vegas.
The Irishman started aggressively by targeting Poirier with leg kicks, but the American quickly capitalised after seeming to hear McGregor’s leg crack during one exchange.
Poirier took his opponent to the ground, where he dominated before the fighters returned to their feet.
Both swung and missed and McGregor stepped back before his leg collapsed beneath him, sparking speculation he may have suffered a bone fracture.
McGregor somehow survived until the end of the round when the bout was stopped.
It was a dramatic conclusion to the bout which followed their January rematch, with Poirier calling his opponent a ‘dirtbag’ after the fight as they traded cross words.
While Poirier himself will have been handsomely rewarded financially for his efforts, it seems ‘Money’ did not want to miss out on the action and placed a $50,000 (£35,960) bet on ‘The Diamond’ to triumph in the trilogy.
It returned the undefeated boxing legend a cool $85k (£61,140) for his troubles as he celebrated a strange night in Las Vegas.
With McGregor set to go into surgery on Sunday morning, the rivalry between himself and Poirier remains very much alive and a fourth fight seems inevitable – provided the surgery is a success.
