Conor Coady hails ‘incredibly exciting’ Wolves appointment of Bruno Lage and explains what makes Harry Maguire ‘massive’ to England despite injury

Bruno Lage’s appointment as Wolves manager is ‘incredibly exciting’ for the club, says captain Conor Coady.

Wolves confirmed the appointment of the Portuguese, 45, who was last in charge of Benfica. He’s also been an assistant at Swansea and Sheffield Wednesday.

Lage was in charge of Benfica for 18 months until June 2020 and is set for the new challenge at Wolves

He succeeds Nuno Espirito Santo, who suddenly called time on his Molineux stint a couple of days before Wolves’ final match of the 2020/21 season.

Coady admits to have been shocked by Nuno’s departure but is looking forward to a new chapter for Wolves under Lage.

“I think it’s always a little bit of a shock when your manager goes. It was a shock when we got told on the Friday,” Coady told talkSPORT.

“But the club’s moving forward and we’ve seen a new manager come in which is incredibly exciting for the football club, it’s incredibly exciting for us all. We’re all looking forward to working under him.

Lage’s appointment has been given Coady’s seal of approval

“I spoke to the club a few times which has been brilliant. It’s a really exciting time for the football club, we’re all excited because we all want to improve and get better.”

Coady’s immediate focus is of course on England though, with the Three Lions beginning their Euro 2020 campaign on Sunday as they take on Croatia at Wembley, LIVE on talkSPORT.

Harry Maguire’s absence from training on Wednesday has thrown up all sorts of debate about who will start at centre-back and how many defenders Gareth Southgate will choose to play.

But whatever Southgate decides, the England players will be ready, insists Coady.

Coady, along with Tyrone Mings (left), John Stones and Ben White will be hoping to get the nod from Southgate on Sunday

“He [Maguire] is a massive part of this team, he’s an incredible footballer and brilliant person so is fantastic to have around the camp. We know he’s got that experience of big tournaments and captaining Manchester United.

“We’re ready for whatever, we’ve not worked on anything in particular at the minute, we’re ready for whatever the manager wants.

“This team is full of world class players who play different ways for their clubs, different ways we try and bring together every single camp we have and it’s no different now.

“Whatever way the manager wants to move forward is great by us because we know we’re here to improve and to try and win as many games as possible.”
