Arsenal fend off late interest from Chelsea as they agree to sign Ben White for £50million from Brighton

Arsenal are finally set to sign Brighton defender Ben White.

This will be a huge boost for the Gunners, who reportedly held off late interest from Chelsea to sign the centre-back.

It took three bids but it looks like Arsenal have got their man

The Sun reports that the north London side have committed to paying Brighton’s £50million asking price having previously had bids of £40m and £42m rejected.

The report adds that White has agreed personal terms with his prospective new club, however, the five-year deal won’t be done until after he returns from holiday.

He was part of the England squad that made it to the final of Euro 2020 but didn’t play during the tournament.

White was given a late call-up by Gareth Southgate after Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced to withdraw with an injury.

White may not have featured for England at Euro 2020 but he has a bright future

The 23-year-old made his England debut in a friendly against Austria, while also making his full debut against Romania days later.

He’s enjoyed a stunning rise in recent years having been on loan at Newport County in League Two three years ago. He’s been on Brighton’s books since 2016, however.

The move won’t sit too well with talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan, who believes White can hold out for a better move than Arsenal.

On the prospect of White joining Arsenal, a bemused Jordan said last month: “Why would he want to go there?

Last season was his first season playing in the Premier League

“With respect to Brighton it’s a step up but there may be other steps available to him that are far more compelling than Arsenal.

“If Ben White is now in the international squad and revered the way he is, because he’s a top quality player, why are Arsenal in the mix? Arsenal are all over the place.

“If you’re comparing and contrasting Brighton to Arsenal then yes it is a step up but if you’re comparing somebody who’s in the England squad that people in the game think is a Rolls Royce then what is the move he’s making to Arsenal for?”
